OUR CURRICULUM

Our curriculum recognizes the three domains of learning viz: Cognitive, Affective and Psycho-motor skills. We operate an elementary Christian school where we integrate the British and the Nigerian curricula.

LITERACY

LITERACY

Our curriculum develops competent and enthusiastic readers, writer, speakers and listeners. We place particular emphasis upon extending children’s abilities, analytical skills, writing structure, oral and written vocabulary.

SCIENCE

SCIENCE

Discussions and activities during science lessons enable our pupils to practically explore the world using their five senses. We teach science in a way that learners are empowered to apply the principles of observation and critical thinking in science to other areas of the curriculum.
Our aim in JNISSI is for children to develop the knowledge and understanding of important scientific ideas, processes and skills and become the best in this subject when compared with other highbrow schools in any competitive examination within and outside Nigeria. This was proved in 2015 when we came out overall winner-1st position among over one hundred schools that participated in the 2015 science Olympiad, Nigeria held in Lagos state of Nigeria.

NUMERACY

NUMERACY

Numeracy is a proficiency that involves confidence and competence with numbers and measure. It requires an understanding of the number system, a range of computer skills and inclination and ability to solve number problems in a variety of contexts. Numeracy also demands practical understanding of the ways in which information is gathered by counting and measuring and it is presented in pictures, graphs, diagrams, charts and tables. The Mathematics coordinators prepare the schemes of work for each year group, ensuring continuity throughout the school.

READING

READING

Our English curriculum uses phonics throughout the Early Years. Children are motivated to read in an environment with displays and prints. They identify various aspects of the printed word, including its purpose, effect and meaning. Reading is made an enjoyable activity. It is important that teachers and parents work together to give all children support, encouragement and patience to develop at their own pace.

WRITING

WRITING

Children concentrate on learning the correct starting point of each of the lower case letters. Writing cursive is encouraged, as this makes it easier when the children learn to join their letters and they are taught in groups with similar patterns.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

The school is a Christian school with the integrated Christian curriculum from the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI)

SPEAKING & LISTENING

SPEAKING & LISTENING

All children are encouraged to participate actively in discussions and to regularly contribute to ‘news’ sessions in the early years, where children recount events and experiences. Throughout their time at school, children use good speech, appropriate vocabulary and correct grammatical forms. Public speaking skills are developed through participation in drama and role play, retelling stories, school assembly presentations, poetry recitation, speech delivery, plays and school productions.
